As a consequence of increased competition, new technologies and increasingly diverse workforces, the environment in which organisations operate is challenging. This module seeks to explore the many factors which influence the actions, behaviour and decisions taken by people in the work-place. It focuses on the complex interactions and relationships between people and groups, both within and between organisations. Furthermore, it explores the impact of the external environment, particularly the expectations and behaviour of wider society, with its roles as a potential customer and citizen. The term fashion is used interchangeably with clothing, mode, dress, style and costume and yet it captures the spirit of the times, through seasonal collections in the major cities of London, Paris, Milan and New York.

You can expect a decent number of contact hours – usually between 20 and 25 hours – in your first year of a fashion degree. On top of this, you will be expected to do a fair bit of independent study, whether that’s at home or in the fashion studios. This could include reading journal articles and books, conducting research, preparing for assessments, working on individual projects and meeting peers to complete group work.

Students can choose to work Independently or form collaborative partnerships to realise their proposition in developing the project through to completion. This unit introduces students to the fashion marketing theories and processes. Students will explore the marketing mix, market research and marketing strategies for different size organisations, before researching the influence marketing has on profit, reputation and the customer relationship. This unit explores fundamental aspects of advertising, the history, theories, purpose, scope and optimum channels. Students will investigate audiences and markets, as well as the psychological influence, impact and ethics of story-telling in marketing campaigns.

You’ll learn how to build and communicate a brand narrative for a variety of fashion organisations and you’ll gain experience of digital technologies and platforms. Topics you may study include consumer behaviour, segmentation, trend forecasting, marketing planning, visual merchandising, digital marketing, brand development, international fashion marketing and public relations. The final year facilitates students’ exploration of the potential future markets, changes and business strategies employed to maximise profit. Marketing in different sized organisations and for different market levels will also be included, with opportunities to provide marketing consultancy and start or support a new enterprise. Graduates will be highly employable, and strong practitioners - with exemplary transferable skills. The course aims to produce successful professionals and entrepreneurs in a truly exciting field of work.
